The country’s four largest banks (the lime green blocks) range in size from $1.4 trillion to $2.2 trillion in assets. At the same time, there are approximately 4,700 community banks with less than $1 billion in assets (the tiny blue dots) that, when combined, total to $1.2 trillion. These community banks account for only 6.7% of the banking system’s assets, while the top four banks account for 8%, 9.4%, 10.1% and 12.4%, collectively controlling nearly 40% of the banking system’s assets. However, community banks play a vital role in their communities. They provide 65% of all industry agriculture lending and 42% of all small loans to businesses in the nation.
